Future-Proof Digitalization – Together

What began as a search for a new software platform quickly evolved into a broader digital transformation. SPIE Sector Mechanical found not just a technical partner in Horizon Internet Technologies, but above all, a company that thinks and acts alongside them. In this case study, you’ll read how the collaboration came about, what has already been achieved, and how both parties are building a digital future together. Marcel Damen (Horizon Internet Technologies) and Marthijn van Dessel (SPIE Sector Mechanical) share their insights on this digital transformation.

“Horizon’s pragmatic approach and expertise really appealed to us”

What does Spie do?

What does SPIE Sector Mechanical do, and why is digitalizing important for your company?

SPIE Sector Mechanical specializes in mechanical maintenance and technical support for industrial installations. Their focus is on ensuring the reliability, safety, and continuity of production processes across various sectors, including (petro)chemicals, energy, water management, and manufacturing. Through this expertise, SPIE Mechanical helps clients achieve efficient, safe, and sustainable industrial operations.

As an innovative, forward-thinking technology partner, SPIE sees digitalization as essential to staying relevant in a rapidly changing market, where industrial automation, smart industry, and data-driven operations are becoming the norm.

The main drivers for digitalization are: increasing customer value, more efficient processes and reduced costs, coping with labor shortages, and improving sustainability and energy efficiency.

The original challenge

SPIE Sector Mechanical was using a software platform that would need to be replaced by the end of 2025. However, early discussions with Horizon Internet Technologies revealed a broader and more ambitious desire for digital transformation. From that point, we worked together to develop a comprehensive plan for 2025 – with SPIE’s people and operations at the heart of it. The plan had to be embraced by the entire organization and ensure operational continuity.

Why Did SPIE Choose Horizon IT?

  1. People with deep digital expertise
  2. An innovative digitalization platform
  3. Efficient, results-oriented processes

The Solution – Our Approach

To bring clarity and structure to SPIE Mechanical’s broad digitalization needs, we first had one of our architects map out their complete IT landscape. This included identifying the various systems in use, the type and location of stored data, and how data exchange was handled – whether manual or automated.

From this analysis, we identified five subprojects to be executed in 2025. We prioritized two of these as the first step and established a joint project organization. This was directly anchored in the SPIE Mechanical management team via a steering group, along with key roles from SPIE Netherlands.

A Project Manager from Horizon Internet Technologies is responsible for the technical implementation and works closely with a SPIE Mechanical Project Manager. This ensures organizational support from SPIE, operational continuity, and an efficient rollout of the subprojects.

What does the future hold

Both SPIE Mechanical and Horizon Internet Technologies are highly satisfied with the collaboration. Communication lines are short, and it’s great to see how the organization has embraced digitalization. After completing the first two subprojects, the remaining three for 2025 will certainly be considered. Horizon Internet Technologies is also in conversation with other SPIE units.
